PwnageTool 3.01 - Update

PwnageTool, the program to unlock and jailbreak iPhone 2G and 3G and jailbreak for the iPod Touch developed by DevTeam, was recently updated to version 3.01. This is a technical update:
- resolves compatibility issues related to PPC (Mac OS X)
- adds Icy
You can download the new version of PwnageTool from here. This update is not for 3.1 firmware and is not for iPhone 3GS, it will not unlock your iPhone 3G - use redsn0w, purplera1n and other tools.
Purplera1n: iPhone 3GS jailbreak by GeoHot

Geohot released a beta software for iPhone 3GS jailbreak called PurpleRa1n. It is beta and has some issues, but it gets the job done if you’re patient.
Requirements: You must have
1) Windows xp sp2 32bit
2) iTunes 8.2.0.23
3) Purplera1n software
The jailbreak is a bit incomplete. The kernel vm_mem patch is not present so Winterboard will not work as some other critical tweaks. (SBSettings does work!).
Use with caution and be patient. If you’re not in a hurry, wait for the release from DevTeam.
iPhone 3GS unlock [Video]
Here’s a new video from DevTeam. They unlocked iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Do not update your iPhone with 3.1 firmware, you will loose this ability.

Speech-to-Speech Voice Translator [Video]
Sakhr is a translation company with big clients like the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. They specialize in English/Arabic translation, and this demo of their iPhone/Blackberry app (not publicly available) looks like the Holy Grail of translation software.
You hold a button, say a phrase and the software captures the information through speech recognition. The text is then translated into either Arabic or English (in the cloud, we believe) and then read aloud so mispronunciation is not an issue.
Voice recognition is a hard part. But if an app works even with 85% accuracy, that’s close enough for most tourists—even if soldiers could find the mistakes a bit more costly.

iPhone users will learn how to sing well

Apple has published a very interesting patent application in which they explore how to provide a Karaoke experience on the iPhone. Not only would users be able to sing along with their favorite songs, but Apple wants to give real-time feedback to singers letting them know how they are doing.
The systems and methods for providing users with real-time feedback while they are singing on key/pitch and providing real-time feedback to the user while the karaoke song is being sung. The feedback will be positive feedback if user is on key/pitch and it will be negative feedback if user is off key/pitch.
Apple suggests that this system could actually improve the quality of people’s singing. One novel way to accomplish this would be to measure the pitch of the singer’s voice and if it were to be too low, the device could exaggerate the low pitch of the user’s own voice to encourage them to sing higher.
Apple clearly depicts pictures of the iPhone’s iPod application with an additional menu option for “Karaoke”. The interface for the Karaoke section is also shown above. We don’t know if Apple will pursue this option in a future version of the iPhone software, but it’s a fun and interesting proposition.

Slide To The Left [Cydia]
There is a small tweak available in Cydia that likely will be relevant to all left-handed users. It is called “Slide To The Left” and does nothing more than change the direction of the slide. To download it you must add the repository PwnCenter: http://apt.pwncenter.com/ Use Winterboard to activate or deactivate the tweak.

Запись сингла с помощью iPhone [Video]
The 88, an American band, had a single recorded using only their musical instruments and the microphone of an iPhone. In particular they used an application called FourTrack, which allows you to record and combine multiple tracks. The result cn be found on iTunes.
BeautyMeter: child pornography in AppStore. Apple eliminates the application.
Apple has just removed another application from AppStore called BeautyMeter. The aim was to collect the images taken directly from iPhone on some sort of virtual dashboard allowing other users to rate the faces and bodies that were displayed.

The application itself complied with all rules of Apple SDK so at that time was regularly approved for the Store. But following the growth of communities there were some who abused the service, uploading pornographic photos. That was the reason why the app was removed.
“Worms” is finally to arrive in AppStore! [Video]

Quake, Quake2 and Quake Arena will be avaliable for iPhone soon

id Software’s John Carmack today confirmed to Shacknews that the company plans to bring three of its Quake titles to the iPhone platform, though Carmack himself may not be heavily involved in the projects. “We will be trying to put some other developers on the future classic titles,” said Carmack. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing all of the work on Quake, Quake 2 and Quake Arena on there.”
The id Software provides an intense activity for the next year, with new projects every 2-3 months. Staremo a vedere. We shall see.
Doom Resurrection released [Video]
